How Spinal Decompression Works
It is important for people to know about spinal decompression, how it works, and why we use it.
First, the goal of spinal decompression is to alleviate the pressure that is being placed on the nerves, ligaments, and tendons in the spine. The spine is made up of a bunch of small bones called vertebrae. These small bones are separated by spinal discs. There are occasions where vertebrae might end up compressing the discs and nerves that are present in the spine. Some of the reasons why this compression might be present include:
- The patient is suffering from a chronic medical condition called degenerative disc disease
- There are pinched nerves in the back that are leading to shock-like sensations
- The patient has suffered a herniated disc that leads to shooting pains that travel down the legs
These are just a few of the reasons why someone might need spinal decompression.
How Does Spinal Decompression Work?
If someone comes in for a treatment session and we decide to go with spinal decompression, it is important for to understand how it works. The goal of spinal decompression is to reduce compression in the back by using a slight amount of traction. When patients come in for a treatment, the patient will lay down on a table. Then, we will use specialized equipment to place traction on the back. This will increase the amount of space between the vertebrae ever so slightly. In this manner, the pressure that is being placed on the nerves, ligaments, and discs can be relieved. As a result, those who are suffering from pinched nerves or a herniated disc can find relief.
There are some situations where a patient might require only a single session of spinal decompression. There are other situations where someone might require more than one session. Regardless, the sooner we can treat these conditions, the better spinal decompression is going to work. We will go over all of this information prior to treatment. We are here to help you.
